Devil Fruits are the strange fruits that grant One Piece characters their superhuman abilities โ at a price. Eat one and you gain a power for life, but you lose the ability to swim, and the sea itself will sap your strength. There are three broad categories, and knowing them explains most of the series' fights.
Paramecia
Paramecia are the most common and the most varied type. They alter the user's body, let them produce or manipulate a substance, or affect the world around them in some way โ without turning the user into a pure element. The range is enormous: stretching like rubber, generating explosions, creating barriers, controlling gravity, or slicing anything into pieces. Because the category is so broad, Paramecia include some of both the silliest and the most terrifying powers in the series. Their common thread is creativity โ a clever user can make a simple-sounding fruit devastating.
Zoan
Zoan fruits let the user transform into an animal, usually with a half-and-half "hybrid" form in between. They're prized for boosting physical ability โ strength, speed, durability, and recovery โ which makes them excellent for close-quarters brawlers. Zoan comes in notable sub-varieties: Carnivorous models are extra aggressive and combat-focused; Ancient Zoan turn the user into prehistoric creatures like dinosaurs; and the exceedingly rare Mythical Zoan grant the forms of legendary beasts such as phoenixes and dragons, often with special abilities of their own. Mythical Zoan are considered some of the rarest and strongest fruits of all.
Logia
Logia are the rarest of the three and, at first glance, the most overpowering. They let the user become, create, and control a natural element โ fire, lightning, smoke, ice, light, magma, and more. The signature trait is intangibility: physical attacks pass straight through a cloud of smoke or a body of flame, making Logia users seem untouchable. That reputation is exactly why they feel so dangerous early on. But Logia have a hard counter โ see below โ and a user who relies on intangibility without the skill to back it up can still be beaten.
The universal weaknesses
Every Devil Fruit user shares two weaknesses: the sea (and seawater) drains their energy, and a special substance called seastone does the same, which is why it's used for prisons and handcuffs. On top of that, Armament Haki is the great equalizer: it lets a fighter strike the real body of a Logia user who would otherwise be intangible. Once Haki enters the picture, a Devil Fruit stops being an automatic win and becomes one tool among several โ read more in our Haki guide.
In Build the Pirate King, "Devil Fruit" is one of the ten attributes โ and because non-fruit fighters score near zero there, filling that slot well means landing a genuine fruit user. It's a great example of why specialization matters when you build. See the tiers & rarity guide for more.
