Haki is One Piece's version of a hidden life force — a willpower every living thing carries but only a few learn to use. It's the great equalizer of the New World: it's how a swordsman with no Devil Fruit can trade blows with a monster, and how fighters land hits on enemies who should be untouchable. There are three types.
1. Observation Haki
Observation Haki (sometimes called the "color of observation") is a kind of sixth sense. At a basic level it lets a user feel the presence, location, and emotional state of others nearby — handy for detecting an ambush or counting enemies through a wall. Pushed further, it sharpens into something close to limited precognition: the user perceives an opponent's next move a moment before it happens, which turns dodging into an almost inevitable reflex. It's the quintessential defensive and tracking skill.
2. Armament Haki
Armament Haki (the "color of armament") is the offensive and defensive workhorse. The user coats their body or weapon in an invisible armor of willpower, hardening it to strengthen attacks and blunt incoming ones. Crucially, it's the counter to Devil Fruit powers: Armament lets a fighter strike the "real" body of an opponent who would otherwise turn to smoke, sand, or rubber. Advanced users can project it slightly beyond their skin to damage a target internally without touching the surface. If Observation is about avoiding hits, Armament is about making — and surviving — them.
3. Conqueror's Haki
Conqueror's Haki (the "color of the conquering king") is the rarest type, said to appear in roughly one in a million people. It can't be trained from scratch — you either have the latent will or you don't — though those who have it can refine it. In its basic form it's an overwhelming pressure of willpower that can knock out weaker-minded people around the user instantly. In its refined form, top fighters can coat their strikes in it, adding devastating force to an already powerful blow. It tends to mark characters destined for greatness, which is why so many captains and Emperors possess it.
Why Haki decides modern fights
Early in One Piece, a strong Devil Fruit often won the day. In the New World, Haki flips that: without it, even a powerful fruit leaves you vulnerable, and with it, a "normal" fighter stays competitive at the highest level. The strongest characters in the series layer all of this together — Observation to read the fight, Armament to land and absorb blows, and Conqueror's to tip it decisively.
