🧭 STRATEGY GUIDE

Synergy & the Duo Bonus

Why the best crews score above their weight

Two crews with identical raw power can finish hundreds of points apart. The reason is synergy — and if you're chasing the King of the Pirates verdict, it's the single most important thing to understand.

What makes up your Crew Rating

Your final rating is built from four ingredients:

Raw power gets you in the door, but the last three are how top players separate themselves.

Faction stacking

Every character belongs to a faction — Straw Hat Pirates, Whitebeard Pirates, Beasts Pirates, the Marines, the Revolutionary Army, and many more. Each additional member you add from the same faction adds a synergy bonus. One Whitebeard commander is just a strong fighter; three of them start compounding into a real point swing.

This creates a natural tension: do you take the strongest character available, or the slightly weaker one who extends a faction you're already stacking? Often the "theme" pick wins, because the synergy bonus more than makes up for a small power gap.

Rule of thumb: once you have two members of a faction, actively look for more of them. A third and fourth crewmate from the same flag can be worth more than a marginally stronger loner.

The Captain–First Mate duo

The biggest single lever in the game is pairing a Captain and First Mate from the same crew. Think of the canonical right-hand pairings across the series — captains and their sworn seconds. When you seat both halves of one of those pairs, you collect a hefty duo bonus on top of the normal captain bonus and any faction synergy they share.

Because this bonus is so large, it's worth planning your run around it. If you spin an iconic captain early, resist filling the First Mate slot with a random strong pick — hold it open and hunt for their partner. Landing the pair is often worth more than two unrelated top-tier fighters.

Putting it together: a high-score game plan

  1. Draft toward one or two factions rather than a random all-star team.
  2. Lock in a genuine, powerful captain for the captain bonus.
  3. Hold the First Mate slot for that captain's same-crew partner.
  4. Fill the scarce specialist slots (Navigator, Doctor, Shipwright) with the best you can find — see the crew roles guide.
  5. Drop your remaining heavy hitters into the three Fighter slots, favoring ones that extend your factions.

Do all five and you'll routinely clear the New World tiers — and give yourself a real shot at the crown. For how power tiers and bounties are displayed while you draft, read the bounties & tiers guide.
