Crew Roles Explained

Filling all ten slots the smart way

A Grand Line crew is ten pirates deep. Seven are specialist roles, and three are flexible Fighter slots. Knowing what each slot wants โ€” and which slots are the hardest to fill well โ€” is the difference between "East Blue Rookies" and "King of the Pirates."

The ten slots at a glance

Captain & First Mate: your most important picks

The captain's chair does double duty: it needs a real captain, and it grants a bonus scaled to that captain's power. So a powerful, genuine captain is worth more here than anywhere else. But don't lock in the first strong captain you see โ€” the real jackpot is pairing your Captain and First Mate from the same crew for the duo bonus (more on that in the synergy guide). If you land a captain early, keep an eye out for their canonical right hand.

The three Fighter slots: your flex power

Fighters are the most forgiving slots โ€” any true combatant qualifies, so this is where your heaviest hitters go if they don't fit a specialist role. Because Fighters accept almost anyone strong, it's usually smart to hold them open early and fill your scarce specialist roles first, then drop your biggest remaining bruisers into the Fighter slots.

The specialist slots: where runs are won or lost

Swordsman, Sniper, Navigator, Doctor, and Shipwright must be filled by characters actually built for that job. In practice, three of these are the bottleneck:

Draft order tip: prioritize the scarce specialists (Navigator / Doctor / Shipwright) when a good one appears, keep the three Fighter slots as a landing zone for raw power, and save your single Skip for when an era offers nothing you can use.

Using the role filter

Every arc's card grid has filter chips. When you're down to one or two open slots, filter to exactly the role you need so you don't waste time scanning. If an era has no one who fits your remaining roles, that's the moment to Skip.

Master the roles, then read up on crew synergy and the duo bonus โ€” that's how the best players push past 900.
